Dr. Vilas A. Bidaye

Pioneer and founder of our Institute - Dr. Vilas Bidaye had completed MBBS in 1961 from Baroda Medical College, M. S. University,  Vadodara (Gujarat). He got this Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1962, and then earned his degree  M.S.(Ophth.) again from M.S. University, Vadodara.

He started private practice in 1962. Few years later, A door of opportunity was opened for him by his teacher and first Mentor Dr. Sudhalkar, who forced him to join Medical college, again, for his Master`s Degree.

Second opportunity also followed soon, when he became first assistant to Dr. P. B. Banaji, an eminent eye surgeon from Mumbai, for his fortnightly visit to the newly formed Retinal Clinic in Vadodara. Here he got an opportunity to lay his hands on Photo-Coagulator Machine (Pre- Laser Era), used for treating  Retinal diseases. Dr. Vilas worked with him from 1969 to 1979 and gathered waste experience from this world famous Ophthalmologist-his second Mentor. This association aroused his interest in Retinal Services and he visited Massachusetts Eye Infirmary in Boston, USA in 1973 to learn more about retina.

Dr. Vilas Bidaye was the first Eye Surgeon to successfully perform Intraocular Lens implant surgery ( IOLs) way back in 1980 in the state of Gujarat. This he could do only after seeing the videos and learning the technique from American Journals. He then visited Japan in 1981 to learn more about Implant technology from the Master- Dr. Akira Momose, who became his third Mentor. His association with this Mentor is still alive.  He introduced Secondary Lens Implant Surgery in 1984, for already operated (Aphakic) patients, with lack or absence of Posterior Capsular support.

He was also the first surgeon to introduce Small Incision Cataract Surgery as non-phaco (without Phaco-machine) technique way back in 1993.

Dr. Bidaye had a penchant for introducing new technologies and was the first to introduce many new techniques in Eye Surgery. Use of Portable Cryo Surgery Technique in Eye Camps was his first contribution, way back in late sixties. Use of Operating Microscope in ophthalmic surgery started by him in early eighties, YAG LASER microsurgery in the private sector in the state in late eighties and Small Incision Cataract Surgery in early nineties was another. He invented a new instrument and called it `Bidaye  Phaco-punch’ for Small incision non-phaco caratact surgery. This technique,  being an economical technique against the expensive Phaco-technique became popular technique in developing countries like Philippine, Shri Lanka etc.

"NETRAMANI" This word was coined by Dr. Vilas Bidaye in 1982 when he wanted to translate his booklet on IOL Surgery into vernacular languages.  

He has presented live surgical videos, chaired National and International Scientific Sessions and has consented to be guest faculty to demonstrate Live Surgery in various seminars and conferences throughout India in an endeavor to share his vast surgical experience. He was honored to Judge the Scientific Free Papers at State and National level, several times.

Being a person with philanthropic mind he made his expertise available to poor and underprivileged people by rendering his free services in Eye-Camps for several years. He conducted a Centre for Prevention of Blindness in a remote and backward rural area of Panchmahal district for three decades. With his strong desire to make the new Implant Technology available to poor needy patients he established `Dr. A. R. Bidaye Memorial Trust, in 1989, in the name of his late father and made this modern technology to reach underprivileged people by performing 100 free surgeries per year. This activity is even continued to day.
